Home/Getting Started

  • Do you know the NAICS or SIC codes for the industry you are researching?   Many business research sources and databases allow searching by these industry codes--a quick way to get industry related information.

  •   The NAICS and SIC numeric codes were initially assigned to business segments by the U.S. Government when collecting statistical data about industries.    The NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes were adopted in 1997 to replace the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system (as originally developed in the 1930's) that is still used by some publishers.  NAICS industries are identified by a 6-digit code, in contrast to the 4-digit SIC code.

Find NAICS and SIC codes for a specific industry using one of these resources:

  • NAICS Codes / U.S. Census Bureau

  • SIC Codes / U.S. Dept. of Labor

  • NAICS-SIC Conversion / NAICS Association
