Industry Statistics from USA Government Sites
U.S. Government agencies gather statistical data in all industry sectors. The Census Bureau is a primary data collector, but many other organizations also collect data. The sites noted below are a small sample.

American Factfinder (retired by the end of March 2020)
From the U.S. Census Bureau, has both demographic and economic data. Select the Business & Industry category from the left menu for the latest Economic Census, annual surveys of manufacturing and more.

Provides sample estimates of statistics for all manufacturing establishments with one or more paid employee. Included are employment, payroll, labor costs, cost of materials, operating expenses, value of shipments, manufacturing value added, capital expenditures, fuels used, and inventories.

Monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity with data on production and shipments of selected products.

Every 5 years the U.S. government counts the nation's businesses and the results are presented by industry category and geographically. The data cover the number and size of establishments, sales, payroll, and number of employees by industry category.

The U.S. Census Bureau terminated the collection of data for the Statistical Compendia program effective October 1, 2011. The Statistical Compendia program is comprised of the Statistical Abstract of the United States and its supplemental products—the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book and the County and City Data Book. To access the most current data, please refer to the organizations cited in the source notes for each table of the Statistical Abstract.

Where to find government data during most Federal Gov. websites' shutdown

When there was a lapse in government funding, several government data websites (for instance Census.gov) would be unavailable until further notice. This might cause inconvenience for your research.

I would like to make a note that we have ProQuest Statistical Abstract of the United States or ProQuest Statistical Insight for most government data in e-version. We also have old census data in print on 3/F (call number - HD7293 .A6113).

Another tip that I would like to share with you: If you need information normally housed on one of the affected sites, don't forget about The Wayback Machine (http://archive.org/web/web.php).
